Large Format tree portrait, before they cut it down.

I take the last portrait of Stampede Elm, the 125 year old American Elm tree before they have to cut it down. I photograph the tree using my Chamonix 4x5 camera and Kodak Tri-x film. You are a fabulous photographer
I love your photos and the approach. I am curious to know how you get in touch with your subjects and get them to agree to a photoshoot? I'd like to do similar, but this first crucial step can be a tricky one particularly with introverts like myself. Once I have a subject in front of my camera I'm comfortable and fine with getting the shot - it's just the first bit that is tougher!
You have to get to know people first, curiosity for sure. I like to find out about people’s lives, who they are and what makes them tick.
I'm curious how you dated it to 1909. Is there a table of serial numbers somewhere on the net? I'd like to be able to date mine more accurately. It's listed in Gundlach catalogs until at least 1925. Yours must be a deluxe model of some sort as the others I've seen are chrome plated rather than the then brand-new stainless steel on yours. Great cleaning job, looks new!

This is cool as hell. I went to a rave at that building before the restoration, but I'd never seen it in its decayed state like you've shown.

I have been after one for along time . How hard is it to develop the film? What size do you recommend to start off with? Do I start with an 8 x 10?
Yes they are great, but if you are just starting out in large format I would try a 4x5 before jumping into 8x10, and learning how a large format camera works and if you like the process. You just need a couple of trays to develop film.

I wish my town would create such art center in the old chocolate factory, but they prefered to build expensive lofts for rich people
Money almost always wins...
The sad thing about this neighborhood is that the revitalizing of that building prompted rents in the area to go up in a crazy way. There were many artists who were forced to move out of their studios because they could no longer afford rent.
@@paulstillwell yes for sure. I photographed a lot of those artists at the time very sad. I am all for having places for artists to create. Unfortunately across the country rents are now crazy, this country has become very hard to live in.

Love to see comparison to today’s high end digital photos to highlight the differences
The highlights come out better on film. It has a less processed look. The colors look more subdued, less neon- or videogame-like. There's more presence in the shots. You don't have any digital artefacts. Objects that are in the background fade and blend away better (no nyquest limit). There will be specks of dust and dirt. The amount of information (in large format) will dwarf any digital image, in both resolution and color information. Digital has to guess by interpolation 2/3 of its color information. It has to then assign each pixel a number with color information. The pixels are lined up in nice neat rows. Film has tiny ink clouds which are spread out randomly. Digital, by my estimate, looks more clinical and sterile, more video-game like. Film, high-end, looks sharper, more put together, with a natural look to it. If you look all day at digital images, your brain will start to like the brighter colors with less variation between shots. If you look at all film collections for a while, your brain will start to prefer the less saturated look.

I use mostly the 30 and 45 lenses for Xpan mode.
